The Legend of Kedarkantha
Kedarkantha means Throat of Lord Shiva.
Apart from Kedarkantha, the major Shiva temples are :
- Kalpeshwar: Hair of Lord Shiva,
- Rudranath: Face of Lord Shiva,
- Tungnath: Arms of lord Shiva,
- Madhyamaheshwar: Navel of Lord Shiva,
- Kedarnath: Back of Lord Shiva
All these are known as “Panch Kedar” The story goes back to the time of Mahabharata. After the war the Pandavas went to himalayas to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva did not appear to meet them. But Lord Shiva took a disguise of abuffalo to mislead the Pandavas. Bheem saw a herd of buffalo decided toplay a trick. He stood on two rocks with his legs wide then the buffalo were made to pass under Bheem. One of the buffalo (disguised) refused to passresulting in a fight with Bheem. In the fight, Bheem ripped apart the buffalo in many pieces. After this, the places where the parts of the buffalo fell were made temples of Lord Shiva.
